Departure at Dawn: A New Watercolor from the Steam in the ’40s Series

I’m excited to share my newest watercolor, Departure at Dawn, an 11 × 14 inch painting from my continuing Steam in the ’40s series.

This painting captures the quiet anticipation of early-morning rail travel. The locomotive emerges through rising steam and the first pale light of day, its silhouette pushing forward into the cool dawn. Soft washes, atmospheric edges, and reflective ground textures shape the mood. It is a moment suspended between night and morning, where motion and memory meet.

Departure at Dawn reflects my fascination with mid-century railroading, the engineering, the drama, and the human stories carried along those tracks.
