About this painting
I painted A Gathering by the Sea from the edge of the water looking back toward the beach, drawn to the colorful bustle of a full Jersey Shore day. Umbrellas brighten the sky while families gather and scatter along the tide line. It’s a scene I’ve watched a hundred times and never get tired of.
Loose watercolor washes capture sunlight shimmering on wet sand, with figures suggested rather than labored, the way memory works. This painting holds the Shore as a place, not a postcard: lively, colorful, and full of small moments.
