I painted A Gathering by the Sea from the edge of the water looking back toward the beach, drawn to that particular chaos of a full Jersey Shore day — the color of umbrellas against blue sky, the way families cluster and scatter at the tide line. It's a scene I've watched a hundred times and never get tired of.
