Water thunders down a sheer rock face, white and relentless, while dark stone walls close in on either side and a glimpse of green and gold light catches the top of the falls, a reminder of the world above.
Bold, granulating washes build the rough texture of the rock, and the reserved whites of the paper do the heavy lifting for the falling water, letting the medium work the way only watercolor can.
I painted this side by side with one of my adult students, both of us working from the same reference at the same time. There's something special about that kind of shared focus. This study captures what I was discovering in that moment alongside them.
A piece for anyone drawn to the raw power of moving water and wild places, at home in a study, cabin, or anywhere you want a reminder of what nature sounds like.
