Study: Roses in the Garden

Peach and yellow roses push through a tangle of branches and leaves, the garden in full summer abundance, color spilling in every direction with the kind of generous chaos that only a well-loved garden has.

Loose, wet washes let the greens and blues of the foliage bleed freely into one another, while the warm tones of the roses hold their own against the cool shadows, the whole composition vibrating with light and life.

I painted this as a demo on how to paint roses, and it sparked one of those conversations that happens in the best classes. A student asked why I kept adding background instead of leaving the flowers isolated, and the answer became the real lesson: without the context of branches, leaves, and shadow, a rose is just a shape. The background is what makes it a garden.
