Watercolor Like Monet

The sky is on fire, gold and orange and red sweeping across the horizon while sailboat silhouettes cut through the shimmering water below, the whole scene pulsing with the kind of light that only lasts a few breathless minutes at the end of the day.

Bold, gestural strokes build the sky in layers of pure color, and the black silhouettes of the boats and treeline anchor the composition without slowing it down. This is watercolor at full volume.

One of my beginning students was trying to capture an Impressionistic feeling and getting frustrated. When I sat beside her, I saw the problem right away: her paint was too watery, and her reference was calling for near tube-consistency color to get that bold, saturated stroke. I painted this alongside her to show what happens when you trust a loaded brush and let the pigment lead. The result surprised us both.
