Where the Rails Meet the Sea

The old tracks emerge from the sand and stretch toward the surf, half-buried and half-revealed, like a memory rising through the shore. This is Cape May Point's ghost tracks, fragments of a rail line that the ocean never fully lets go, resurfacing after storms and tides to create a quiet meeting place between land, sea, and time.

During my spring residency, I spent time walking this shoreline, drawn back again and again to the place where the old rail line sometimes reappears. Locals call them the ghost tracks, and the name fits: they feel less like infrastructure and more like something the landscape is trying to remember.

In this 9 x 12 watercolor, I wanted to capture that moment when the rails appear again, stretching toward the surf like a memory rising through the sand. The soft coastal light, the muted palette, and the gentle movement of the tide all work together to create a sense of quiet inevitability. Time is always shifting this landscape, revealing and erasing in equal measure.

This painting is part of my ongoing exploration of New Jersey's shoreline, where atmosphere, history, and personal memory intersect.
